Wood screws are threaded fasteners that are used to join wooden workpieces. They aren't necessarily made of wood. Rather, wood screws are available in many of the same metals and alloys as other screws. They are simply known as "wood screws" because they are designed for use with wooden workpieces.
While creating a pilot hole isn't always necessary, they prevent material damage and make it easier to drill in the screw. Attempting to drill in screws without creating a pilot hole first can crack the wood or otherwise damage the material.
A lag screw is the strongest in the family of wood screws. It is a sturdy and durable fastener often designed with an externally driven hex drive or square head. Lag screws feature a tapered point and coarse threads and are typically tougher and much heavier than conventional wood screws.
Recommendations for finding the right sized wood screw: length, gauge & dimensions. The thickness of the attached materials should be top of mind when assessing wood screw options. We recommend that the fastener's shank be the length of the top attachment plus ⅔ of the bottom layer depth.
